Tuition fees
Tuition fees for all Bachelor's and Master's students are currently CHF 730 per semester. In Autumn Semester 2025, a new regulation will come into effect that distinguishes between two groups of students.
Simple tuition fee: 730 CHF / semester
- for students with Swiss citizenship
- for students with Liechtenstein citizenship
- for students who were resident in Switzerland or the Principality of Liechtenstein at the time they obtained their university entry qualification certificate (e.g. Matura, Abitur, etc.). This applies to all students regardless of their nationality.
Students who are citizens of an EU/EFTA country are subject to the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons with the EU (AFMP) resp. EFTA Agreement:
- Students who hold an EU/EFTA residence permit for employment or self-employment in Switzerland (B or L permit with the purpose of residence ‘gainful employment’) or a C settlement permit. This also applies to children of persons with this residence status, provided that the children are already resident in Switzerland.
- Persons who can claim family reunification in accordance with the Free Movement of Persons with the EU/EFTA
The cantonal migration offices or the municipality of residence are responsible for issuing a residence permit or settlement permit. If you have any questions about your residence status, please contact the relevant migration authority or municipality of residence directly.
Threefold tuition fee: 2190 CHF / semester
Students of foreign nationality who reside in Switzerland or the Principality of Liechtenstein for the purpose of studying and are granted a residence permit (B permit) for the purpose of studying.
Residence is deemed to have been established for the purpose of studying if the person concerned was not resident in either Switzerland or the Principality of Liechtenstein at the time the university entry qualification certificate was acquired.
Please note that the residence permit B (purpose of studying) does not entitle you to the simple tuition fee. Any secondary employment within the scope of this residence permit does not constitute a basis for the simple tuition fee.
As part of the admission procedure, ETH Zurich will check whether a threefold tuition fee is required.
Transitional regulations
The threefold tuition fee for foreign students will apply from the Autumn Semester 2025.
Exempt from this rule are students who prior to this date were already:
a. enrolled in a Bachelor's degree programme at ETH, the previous fees apply until completion of the Bachelor's degree programme;
b. enrolled in a Master's degree programme, the previous fees apply until completion of the Master's degree programme
