Spark Award for new corrosion protection

More effective, reusable and self-repairing: a new kind of corrosion protection developed by the ETH researchers Marco D'Elia, Walter Caseri and Markus Niederberger has been honoured with the Spark Award 2023. The collaboration project with the University of Milan has excellent market potential and could significantly slow down the deterioration of buildings and vehicles.

The winning technology is a new corrosion protection. Corrosion attacks everything, from ships to skyscrapers. The market for effective corrosion protection is correspondingly large. The newly developed polymer can be sprayed on like paint and even be peeled off again, recycled and reused.

The Spark Award is a prize given for the most promising invention that ETH Zurich filed as a patent in the past year. The evaluation criteria are originality, patent strength and market potential.
