How do I apply?

Inform yourself in advance about the admission prerequisites for your desired Master’s degree programme and the documents required for your online application.

Chances of admission

Please understand that we cannot provide academic guidance in advance or assess your chances of admission. Your documents will be evaluated only after submission.

For successful application we recommend that you consider the following points:

Please inform yourself in advance about the Master’s degree programme which interests you:

If you have the Swiss Matura you are not required to provide a language certificate.

If you have not yet completed your Bachelor’s degree at the time of application, ensure that you will receive the degree certificate at the latest by the time lectures begin at ETH Zurich.

Please refer to the application dates for our Master’s degree programmes.

We recommend that all candidates apply in the first application window: you receive a decision earlier, and can plan your next steps. At ETH Zurich it is only possible to enter Master’s degree studies in the Autumn Semester.

Please be careful to start collecting the required documents at an early stage. Incomplete applications cannot be processed and it is not possible to submit your application after the deadline expires.

Collect all of the required documents early on. This applies particularly to official documents from the university or universities where you have studied. You will require:

  • Official transcripts / academic records from every university attended, including any mobility or exchange programmes and study programmes which were not completed; double-degree programmes require transcripts from both universities
  • A valid language certificate, unless you hold the Swiss Matura
  • Additional documents such as a CV, a portfolio, a letter of motivation, a letter of recommendation; these depend on the desired degree programme

For further information on the documents required by your desired Master’s degree programme, and the format in which they should be uploaded, see here.

When you have collected all of the required documents, apply for your desired Master’s degree programme online via eApply. Please fill out the online application form completely.

You will be guided through the online application procedure step by step. Please note that your entries must be substantiated by uploads of the required documents (CV, official academic records, etc.). To complete your application you will be directed automatically to the payments page for payment of the application fee by credit card. You will receive a confirmation by email as soon as you submit your online application.

You may apply for two different degree programmes per semester.

To online application

For the application we charge an administration fee of CHF 50. Please understand that this fee cannot be waived and is not refundable.

This fee must be paid by credit card (Visa or MasterCard) or PostFinance card when you submit your online application.

It is possible that payments via credit cards from certain countries will not be accepted by the bank on security grounds. Before you apply, ask your bank about the status of international transactions.

Applications may only be submitted online after the respective fees have been paid.

If your application has been submitted by the deadline and is complete it will be screened by the Admissions Office.

If it satisfies all of the formal criteria, the application is forwarded to the Admissions Committee of your desired degree programme for evaluation. This committee assesses it for content and checks how far your previous education corresponds to the profile of requirements set out in the appendix to the respective programme regulations. Finally, the Admissions Committee formulates a request for acceptance or rejection and sends this to the Admissions Office. Please note that this process may take some weeks.

After your application has been screened by the Admissions Office and assessed by the Admissions Committee, a written admission decision will be available for download on eApply (see calendar dates). Decisions are normally issued within 2-3 months of the submission deadline.
