Teaching Lab: Digital Accessibility @ ETHZ

This Teaching Lab provides all the basics for understanding measures and adaptations to improve digital accessibility.

Who is this Teaching Lab for?

This Teaching Lab is aimed at all ETHZ members who are involved in any way in teaching or in the creation of learning materials such as e-learning content, electronic documents and learning videos, but also exams. This of course includes lecturers and the creators of learning content themselves, but also those responsible for the digital learning infrastructure.

The course may be taken by anyone who wants to gain both a broad and in-depth understanding of the topic of digital accessibility in a relatively short time.

Course content

In this Teaching Lab you will learn the basics of what digital accessibility is all about and how you can contribute to accessible teaching by creating accessible learning materials. On e-learning platforms, electronic documents and in your videos.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe what e-Accessibility is all about and where digital accessibility is crucial in teaching.
  • Check your learning materials for accessibility.
  • Create accessible learning materials or at least find support for creating accessible content.

How does this Teaching Lab work?

The course is offered in three phases:

  • Moodle course: First an online module for self-​study
  • Practice Workshop: This is followed by a half-day workshop led by an e-Accessibility specialist, where participants discuss with other participants to solve specific problems and clarify open questions.
  • e-Accessibility Project: Then there is a transfer phase, where course participants are expected to put concepts from the course in to practice in their own course contexts and reflect on their implementation.

Moodle course

This is an independent, self-paced course. Work through the content and solve the different activities and exercises. Upon successful completion of the course and activities, you can win the Accessibility Badge.

Not only will you learn the key fundamentals of accessible teaching and accessible digital learning materials. By working through the activities, you will learn how to check your own learning content for accessibility and how to avoid and reduce barriers in your learning content.

Please note: The self-​study phase consists of a Moodle course which can be completed independently of the second and third phase. Participants will be able to enrol in the Moodle course directly.

Practice Workshop

Reflect and share your acquired knowledge and skills in one of our Practice Workshops. In doing so, you will clear up any ambiguities. It also provides great opportunities to discuss specific challenges in implementing accessibility with specialists and in the group.

e-Accessibility Project

Finally, you will apply and demonstrate the skills you have acquired in an e-Accessibility Project of your own choice. The e-Accessibility projects are intended to be the first pragmatic measures to improve digital accessibility at your chair or department. We are happy to accompany and support you on this journey.
