Total Solar Irradiance (TSI) is an important parameter in understanding and predicting Earth's climate system. It plays a crucial role in determining the planet's energy balance which is the net between the incoming solar and outgoing electromagnetic radiation at the top of the Earth's atmosphere PMOD/WRC has built and operates three active radiometers: the PMO6 radiometer as part of the VIGRO instrument on board the SOHO mission, launched in December 1995 (still active); CLARA on board the Norwegian NorSat-1 satellite, in orbit since July 2017; and DARA on board the Chinese FY-3E satellite, launched in July 2021. The instruments provide data that allow scientists to calculate TSI. This project aims to explore the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in performing time-consuming operations more consistently and efficiently, potentially reducing cognitive bias from human operators.

Qualifications required: MSc or BSc (ETH students only); basic knowledge in statistical data analysis, very good knowledge of Python and machine learning libraries (e.g., Scikit-learn, Tensorflow, PyTorch), desire to learn how to integrate AI capabilities using AI platforms such as ChatGPT, BARD and others.

Start date: Time mutually agreed upon.

Duration: 1 month. It is expected that you spend most of that time in Davos.
