external page Every so often, a record is broken by a large margin – often driving unprecedented impacts, as well as alarm about what it might signify about the pace of climate change. Researchers call this “record-shattering” or “record-smashing” heat, explains Prof Erich Fischer, a climate extremes scientist at ETH Zurich and a lead author of the most recent landmark assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). He tells Carbon Brief:..“You would expect global temperature to increase rather smoothly, with some wiggles. It’s not like the temperature in our backyard, which goes crazy up and down.”

CUHK unveils novel remote endoscopy surgery

external page A surgeon in Zurich has performed the world’s first remote endoscopy procedure on a pig in Hong Kong, as researchers believe it paves the path for better and immediate surgical care in remote areas where local expertise is lacking. The procedure was conducted in May as part of a joint-study between the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) which started two years ago. The clinician in Switzerland controlled a surgical controller that was remotely connected across 9,300 kilometres to an endoscope in the operating theatre in Hong Kong, CUHK said, noting that the endoscope matched every movement the clinician made.

The Era of Runaway Heat Records Is Here

external page It’s a fundamental question raised by the research of Erich Fischer, a climate scientist at ETH Zurich. Fischer began to wonder several years ago if the world was seeing records falling more dramatically. Simulating extreme heat waves in the US led him to a conclusion so unusual he initially rejected it. He observed in his data the possibility in coming decades of “record-shattering extremes, nearly impossible in the absence of warming,” he and other researchers wrote in a 2021 paper

ETH Zurich Finds Green Feedstock Alternative to Fossil to Make Chemicals

external page Instead of crude oil, the ETH Zurich team leverages methanol as feedstock, with the help of E. coli. The E. coli feeds off the methanol to reproduce, and it ultimately converts carbon from methanol into sustainable products. While this may sound like weird science—most people think of E. coli as a nasty bug lurking in the gut—the bacterium has long been used in bioproduction. But this is the first time it’s been put to the test to see if it can utilize methanol to make products. “Because E. coli has been used for so long, we know how it behaves and works and over time we have gotten good at changing its behavior, so it does what we want it to do,” says Michael Reiter, a researcher at the Institute for Microbiology, ETH Zurich, and study co-first author.
