Institutional Research

The Institutional Research (IR) team is responsible for supporting the operational and strategic management of ETH Zurich by providing decision-making bases for the Executive Board, departments and support units.  

The team’s activities include:

  • Analysis of staff, student, learning and research, facility and organisational data as well as ETH-external data sources
  • Definition and communication of meaningful resource and performance indicators
  • Preparation of data for global university rankings and benchmarking processes at ETH Domain, national and international-level, as well as analysis and reporting of the results
  • Management of the Annual Academic Achievements (AAA) process as part of the academic reporting process of the Teaching and Research units
  • Provision of data for statutory reports, including for the Federal Statistical Office (BfS), ETH Zürich and ETH Domain annual reporting
  • Preparation and provision of results from the BfS graduate surveys for further analysis by departments and central units
  • Maintenance and continuous development of ETH Graph Search, a graph database linking ETH research units, researchers and their research outputs in the context of a detailed research concept taxonomy (restricted access for certain ETH-groups and functions – only accessible via ETH-network or VPN)

Head of Institutional Research

Stephan Zimmermann leads the Institutional Research team and is the Deputy Head of Controlling. He is responsible for the overall success of the Institutional Research team and coordinates the tasks. He's also the primary contact for relations with the staff ETH Domain and the Federal Office of Statistics (OFS).

The Institutional Research team

Yiqing Ling is the contact person for personnel statistics and insights from ETH Zürich’s participation in the graduate survey of the Federal Office for Statistics (OFS).

Daniel Jung is the primary contact person for the Annual Academic Achievements (AAA) process and the Controlling Data Warehouse. Additional roles include data wrangling, data science, and Tableau visualizations.

Brigitte Huber is the supporting contact person for the Annual Academic Achievements process and is also the contact person for grants reporting, university ranking data submission and results analysis. She is also coordinating the IR data contribution for departmental evaluations.

Luisa Schneider is the contactperson for teaching statistics data (QdL) and space specific data. As an economist she also offers an economic perspective to various IR topics.  

IR also offers reports with student statistics and further analyses in ETHIS (see ‘Lehre & Forschung’*).

* the majority of ETHIS reports are accessible only to staff with specific roles (e.g. Student delegates, Department Heads).
