ETH Domain
Together with EPF Lausanne and the four research institutes Eawag, WSL, Empa and PSI, ETH Zurich forms part of the ETH Domain, a closely cooperating network which places Swiss research in an excellent position at international level.
With joint competence centres in the fields of environment and sustainability, energy and mobility, materials science and technology and bioimaging, the ETH Domain covers a wide range of topic areas, to the benefit of education and research at ETH Zurich. More than 20 jointly funded professorships in specialist areas of general interest form a key element of this interinstitutional cooperation.
The external page ETH Board and the external page ETH Appeals Commission also belong to the ETH Domain, serving as a strategic management body and an independent appeals body respectively.

The Swiss federal government outlines the purpose of the two universities and four research institutes in the external page Federal Institutes of Technology Act (FIT Act):
- To educate students and specialists in scientific and technical fields and ensure continuing education and training
- To expand scientific knowledge through research
- To foster junior scientific staff
- To provide scientific and technical services
- To ensure a dialogue with the public and exploit research findings
The ETH Board is responsible for the ETH Domain’s strategic planning. It compiles this four-year strategy for submission to the Confederation, from which the Federal Council’s strategic objectives for the ETH Domain (formerly known as “performance mandate“) are derived. The basis for this is provided by the Dispatch on the Promotion of Education, Research and Innovation (external page ERI Dispatch - in German).
