Data Monitoring in ETHIS

The ETH financial portal ETHIS has been serving as a monitoring system for the air travel emissions of the entire ETH Zurich since 2019.

To monitor the air travel emissions of ETH Zurich, the flights of all organizational units are recorded in the ETH financial portal ETHIS via expense reimbursement. When entering the expenses, the flight date, the flight number, the function of the traveler, the flight class, and the travel purpose, among other things, must be recorded. The ETH Zurich Regulations Concerning Business Expenses serve as a guideline on the reimbursement of expenses related to air travel and were last updated on May 1, 2021.

The regulations call upon ETH members to limit air travel to the bare minimum and to use the appropriate rail or bus options for destinations within Europe that can be reached in under 8 hours. Economy Premium and Business Class flights are generally only approved for intercontinental flights and First Class flights are not reimbursed at all. The data currently still show inconsistencies between regulations and practice.

DownloadThis quick guide (PDF, 386 KB) (only in German) and Downloadthis presentation (PDF, 1.9 MB) support ETH members in entering flight-related expenses in ETHIS. Further information on entering air travel can be found on this page in the ETHIS Help section of the ETH Finance & Controlling division. For those members who have access to the calculated air travel emission data in ETHIS, this page, also in the ETHIS Help area, provides assistance in selecting the flight and emission data and explanations of the data fields and terms (both pages only in German).
