Internships
You do not need a work permit for an internship.
- The start of the internship must be reported to the external page Migration Office.
- Please upload your internship contract and a confirmation of matriculation.
Employment
You need a work permit if you work more than 15 hours per week during the semester.
- Submit your employment contract and confirmation of matriculation to the external page Migration Office.
- The Migration Office decides whether you can keep your residence permit with the purpose of residence "education" or whether it has to be changed into "employment".
You do not need a work permit if you work less than 15 hours per week during the semester. During the lecture-free period, employment of up to 100% is possible.
Health insurance
European Health Insurance:
As soon as you start earning income, your insurance coverage is no longer guaranteed. This also applies to mandatory or temporary internships with low income.

Change of residence permit:
Once you have obtained a work permit for the purpose of employment (without a student status anymore), you will no longer be eligible for the student health insurance packages.
- Switch to a "normal" Swiss health insurance plan (KVG) before the start date of your employment.
