Baukultur (Building culture)

The Real Estate Management department implements measures for building culture at ETH Zurich and advises on issues relating to building culture. ETH Zurich is thus following the federal government's strategy on this topic.

What are the tasks of the Building culture centre?

The centre is currently being set up with these objectives for the ETH Zurich:

  • Promote appropriate structures and processes and develop tools for procurements relevant to building culture.
  • Develop and implement measures.
  • To oversee the topic of monument preservation at ETH.
  • Be responsible for and maintain the Holdings of ETH Zurich Architectural culture inventory.
  • Creating an understanding of building culture, e.g. through a website, exhibitions, etc.

What is inventoried? 

ETH objects and buildings that are considered groundbreaking for their time of origin, for example because of the way they were built or their design.
 

What are ETH's aims with the inventory?

  • To collect furniture, furnishings and components from ETH buildings.
  • To document these objects and the inventory of historical ETH buildings.
  • To make the collection accessible in exhibitions and via website mit catalogue search (in German). In addition, the collection depot can be visited on request.

Background

The 2020 external page Baukultur policy of the Federal Office of Culture (BAK) sets out how the Swiss federal government intends to promote Baukultur. ETH Zurich, as part of the ETH Domain managed by the Confederation, plans and implements corresponding measures. The external page Davos Baukultur Quality System supports this work.
