“Students have always been close to my heart”

With Markus Aebi’s retirement, ETH is losing a great scientist. The microbiologist has also made a name for himself as a teacher and mentor well beyond his own discipline. His passion for research and teaching is reflected in his involvement in many university institutions – and in a series of prestigious awards.

Professor Aebi is a leading scholar in the field of glycobiology. I learned a lot from his papers, and this year the great scientist entered the next stage of his life, thanks to the professor for his contribution to science.

I really mentor for student. The best lecturer, the best guide and scientist I have ever met. Congratulation Prof. Aebi!

By far the best lecturer I've ever had, you have a way of transmitting your passion like no one else; it's infectious. Thanks for everything and best of luck in this new chapter!

What an inspiration you are, Professor Aebi - both as a great human, researcher and teacher - presenting a role model to all the ETH's future scientists and teachers. Having had the good fortune of teaching at ETH myself for 37 years in a far more modest role as a lecturer in the Humanities, I can still embrace every word you say and share your timeless enthusiasm for ETH and its wonderful students as a reciprocal, life-enhancing experience - to be continued beyond your "active career", no doubt, in whatever format...
