A year ago Parag Khanna, Managing Partner of FutureMap and author of MOVE, and Myriam Dunn Cavelty, Senior Lecturer for Security Studies at ETH Zurich, featured in the ETH Global Lectures to discuss thoughts on how to better prepare for tomorrow. They reunite one year later to discuss their year and where they believe we are now heading.
The background conditions of the climate crises and the global pandemic persist. And, we observe a splintering of geographical systems. Every region has its own set of regimes, mistrust is on the rise, and there is even fragmentation within borders. This neo-Medieval world has implications at many levels, and the effects are not uniform. How will we need to think about this going forward? What scenario will prevail in each geography? Will we need to be more geographically specific in everything that we do? Is the unifying forces of commerce waning? Can we even speak of truly global solutions to any problem anymore? Which system will be best suited to respond to the challenges we continue to face? How do we respond to the growing wish for stronger leadership? Can democracy survive?

He is Founder & Managing Partner of FutureMap, a data and scenario based strategic advisory firm. Parag's newest book is MOVE: The Forces Uprooting Us (2021), which was preceded by The Future is Asian: Commerce, Conflict & Culture in the 21st Century (2019). He is author of a trilogy of books on the future of world order beginning with The Second World: Empires and Influence in the New Global Order (2008), followed by How to Run the World: Charting a Course to the Next Renaissance (2011), and concluding with Connectography: Mapping the Future of Global Civilization (2016). He is also the author of Technocracy in America: Rise of the Info-State (2017) and co-author of Hybrid Reality: Thriving in the Emerging Human-Technology Civilization (2012).
Parag was named one of Esquire’s “75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century,” and featured in WIRED magazine’s “Smart List.” He holds a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics, and Bachelors and Masters degrees from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. He has traveled to nearly 150 countries and is a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum.
Myriam Dunn Cavelty is a Senior Lecturer for Security Studies and Deputy for Research and Teaching at the Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich. She studied International Relations, History, and International Law at the University of Zurich. She was a visiting fellow at the Watson Institute for International Studies (Brown University) in 2007 and fellow at the stiftung neue verantwortung in Berlin, Germany 2010–2011.
Her research focuses on the politics of risk and uncertainty in security politics and changing conceptions of (inter-)national security due to cyber issues (cyber-security, cyber-war, critical infrastructure protection) in specific. In addition to her teaching, research and publishing activities, she advises governments, international institutions and companies in the areas of cyber security, cyber warfare, critical infrastructure protection, risk analysis and strategic foresight.
