Hugo Bucher has been full Professor of Paleozoology (University of Zürich / ETH Zurich) at the Paleontological Institute and Museum since October 16, 2001. He was born on February 20, 1960 in Boulogne Billancourt, France and studied Geology at the University of Lausanne where he graduated with a doctorate in Paleontology under the supervision of Prof. Jean Guex in 1990. With a fellowship of the Swiss National Foundation, he conducted his research at the Geological Survey of Canada (Vancouver, B.C.) from 1991 to 1993. He then joined the French CNRS as Chargé de Recherche in 1994 and became Professor at the University Claude Bernard Lyon I in 1995.
Hugo Bucher-s main research interests include pattern formation and growth of the molluscan shell, the structure of morphological evolutionary trends, quantitative biochronology and large scale changes of species richness in time and space as responses to major environmental changes. The majority of these topics are addressed through the investigation of Triassic ammonoid faunas, with intensive field research in the North American Cordillera, the Tethyan Himalaya, and the South China Block.
