The Ralph Shangraw Memorial Award, named after Professor Shangraw who spent almost 40 years teaching and conducting research on improving the understanding of excipients at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, is awarded by the IPEC Americas Foundation.

The award honors research that contributes to an understanding of the basic science underlying excipient functionality, and excipient safety, including the development of test methods and standards, the development of new excipients or novel use of existing excipients in new applications, and the development of rational compendial/regulatory standards for excipients.

This year, the award endowed with $10,000 goes to Jean-Christophe Leroux, Professor for Drug Formulation and Delivery at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences. Jean-Christophe Leroux’s research interests include the design of novel biopolymers, stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems (liposomes, micelles, and gels), and the targeting of anticancer drugs.
