I am delighted to welcome you, as a new faculty member, to ETH Zurich. I would like to wish you a successful start in this new phase of your career at our university.

As a new professor at ETH Zurich, you are joining a remarkable community of scholars, in a region of the world that values and acknowledges the benefits of advances in science and technology. As a leading international institution in research, ETH Zurich offers our faculty the kinds of resources that create an environment of unparalleled academic freedom – enabling scholars the opportunity to explore, to discover, and to develop solutions for some of the world's most urgent problems. This freedom is naturally coupled with an equally high level of responsibility - in terms of contributing to society, and in forging productive communities that embrace a culture of respect.

ETH Zurich is dedicated to creating and imparting knowledge for the benefit of our students, for the people of our region and nation, and for the international academic community. The university prides itself in fostering a culture of creativity and empowerment, supporting innovative and unconventional ideas. The institution encourages expertise and initiatives, drawing upon the diverse skills and talents found at ETH linking fundamental research at the highest level with leading-edge teaching.

This, however, would not be possible without professors who are engaged and committed to our mission. We expect you - our faculty - to create new ideas, to develop outstanding partnerships, and to inspire future generations in the quest for new knowledge and understanding. In order to make the most out of your career here at ETH Zurich, we want you to be aware and make use of the various technical support systems available not only for your research, but also for your own professional development.

Lastly, I would like to draw your attention to a short guide, which we have written for professors and other team managers, providing you with an overview of ETH Zurich practices and of the resources needed for leaders at our university.

I wish you all the best with your transition into your new role at ETH Zurich and trust that you will make the most out of your professorship and your time at our university.

Sincerely,
Joël Mesot, President of ETH Zurich
