Media kit for the 55th IChO Switzerland 2023

International Chemistry Olympiad

An annual competition, IChO challenges the world’s most talented chemistry students at the secondary school level. This year more than 80 nations from around the world sent a team of four students to Switzerland from 16 - 25 July 2023 to challenge their chemistry knowledge and skills.

IChO in Switzerland for the first time

Professor Guenther Dissertori, President of IChO 2023, Rector of ETH Zurich, and former Chemistry Olympian himself welcomed upwards of 900 participants including: students, mentors, observers, guests, and members of the media to the 55th International Chemistry Olympiad 2023 held in Switzerland for the first time and hosted by ETH Zurich.

Announcement: First time in Switzerland: the 55th Chemistry Olympiad

The exams

Young scientists participating engaged in a five-hour laboratory practical exam, as well as a five-hour written theoretical examination.

The awards

All participants were ranked based on their individual scores and no official team scores were provided. IChO awarded the following medals:

• Gold - top 12% of students
• Silver - next 22% of students
• Bronze - next 32% of students
• Honorable mentions - top 10% of non medalist participants

Special awards are given to the student that achieves the highest score overall, and to the students who get the best score in the theoretical and practical examinations.
