The Origin of Living

RETHINKING LIVING invites us to consider our position in a shifting societal, global context. But we can go even further: RETHINKING LIVING invites us to consider our very existence in relation to the realms of matter, space and time.

Join the open dialogue hosted by ETH Zurich for the public and guests of the ETH Pavilion in Davos.

Origen: The White Tower

23 May, 18:00-19:00
followed by a networking reception

The White Tower

In Rumantsch, “Origen” means genesis, origin, creation. It is also the name of the cultural organisation responsible for the annual Origen Festival of Culture, one of the driving forces behind the future White Tower that will be erected in the Grisons village of Mulegns. This session celebrates this architectural gem, and features members of the Origen Foundation and the ETH Zurich architects involved in the project.

How do we have to rethink Higher Education and the University as a whole for it to remain relevant in the future?  In a three-hour workshop, we will discuss, envision, and reflect on how our Universities might evolve in the next 20 years. What could a truly hybrid University look like? What could a truly personalized University look like? What could a University look like that offers life-long engagement to their students? What if we all went back to study or to do research on a regular basis and remained enrolled in the University for our entire life?

 RETHINKING LIVING

This flagship event/reception in the ETH Pavilion presents the results of a campaign ETH Zurich ran asking the ETH Community: when you re-think living - What concerns you most? Removing Barriers to Global Digital Cooperation

25 May, 12:00-13:00

Removing Barriers to Global Cooperation

Technology nationalism is on the rise. How can we enforce the right to digital self-determination? What form can meaningful and responsible cooperation with market leaders take? What competencies do states need to build up so that the authority to act and make decisions always remains with the companies and organizations involved?

The House That Owns Itself

ETH Zurich invites you to enter the RETHINKING LIVING-Room to discover no1s1, the house that owns itself. Entirely set up and enabled thanks to blockchain technology, it turns out this revolutionary space raises more questions than it answers. Is this how we will think of wealth and profit in the future? Who initiates and finances a house that belongs to no one? Can self-owned houses lower the cost of living?

With the advent of blockchain, a whole new layer of complexity opens up for organisations and individuals navigating what is almost a parallel universe. In the context of the RETHINKING LIVING series, we want to set the record straight and ask: What are the implications of this transformative new technology for society? How can we make sense of blockchain projects in different contexts and industries, and how do we as citizens and consumers relate this to the real world?
