From 1983 till 2002, Meinrad Eberle was full Professor for Internal Combustion Engines and Combustion Technology heading the Laboratory of Internal Combustion Engines and Combustion Technology at the Institute of Energy Technology at ETH Zurich. He was especially interested in ecology and economy of the internal combustion engine and its applications with an emphasis on the problems of sustainable mobility.



Prof. Eberle was born June 2, 1937, and is a citizen of Zurich and Amden. In 1961, he received his diploma in mechanical engineering at ETH Zurich. From 1961-1963, he was an assistant at the Institute of Thermodynamics and Internal Combustion Engines at ETH Zurich - at that time headed by Prof. Max Berchtold. From 1963-1969, he was working at the R+D Diesel Department of Sulzer Brothers Ltd., Winterthur. In 1968, he received his Ph.D. from ETH Zurich with a thesis entitled: -Contribution of the Thermodynamic Calculation of the Interaction of Internal Combustion Engines and Pressure Chargers-. From 1969-1972, he was with General Motors Research in Warren (USA); from 1973-1983 with Sulzer Brothers Ltd., first as Head of the Research Section in the Diesel Engines Department; from 1980 on as Assistant Vice President, Head of the Research and Development Test Section. From 1990-1992, he was Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of ETH Zurich (Department IIIA). From 1992 till 2002, he was the Director of the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen. From 2002 to 2005 he was responsible as Project Manager for the 150 years Jubilee of ETH Zurich.
