Erick Carreira and Jürg Fröhlich new members of the National Academy of Sciences

The American National Academy of Sciences elected at its annual meeting new members. Among them are Erick Carreira, Professor of Organic Chemistry, and Jürg Fröhlich, Professor Emeritus of Theoretical Physics.

With their election, Erick Carreira and Jürg Fröhlich have entered a distinguished circle of scientists. The National Academy of Sciences recognizes achievements in science and with the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine  provides science, engineering, and health policy advice to the US government and other organizations.

Carreira joined ETH Zurich in 1998. His research focuses on the asymmetric synthesis of biologically active, stereochemically complex natural products.

Fröhlich was Professor at ETH Zurich from 1982 until his retirement in 2011. His main research interests are in quantum field theory, classical mechanics and quantum theory of systems with many degrees of freedom, in statistical physics and in mathematical methods of theoretical physics.
