The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina has awarded ETH Zurich Materials scientist, Nicola Spaldin, the Carus Medal 2024 for her outstanding research work. The award will be presented on 22 May 2025 in Schweinfurt, Germany.
ETH establishes a Sustainability Council

With the establishment of the new body, ETH Zurich is strengthening its strategic commitment to sustainability. Starting in October 2025, the council will advise the Executive Board on issues of sustainable development, thereby efficiently unlocking new potential in research, education, and campus operations.
Ulrike Lohmann receives Vilhelm Bjerknes Medal 2025
Honours and prizes
Ulrike Lohmann, Professor for Atmospheric Physics at ETH Zurich, has been awarded the 2025 Vilhelm Bjerknes Medal by the European Geosciences Union (EGU) for her research on cloud-climate interactions. Her work combines microscale processes and satellite data with global models to assess the radiative impact of clouds on the Earth system.

Following isolated discoveries of elevated heavy metals levels in tap water at ETH Zurich in the autumn of 2024, an external report has now signalled the all-clear. However, standing water can still absorb small quantities of lead or nickel from fixtures and fittings. In light of this fact, users should allow taps to run until the water temperature is constant before drinking.
