Video production
Using videos is a must if you want to reach a young, non-scientific public. These are especially popular on social media.
There are four types of video production:
- DIY: ETH members produce their own videos themselves.
- External assistance: ETH members commission an external person/company to produce their videos.
- Internal assistance: ETH members entrust their video production to the Multimedia Production (MMP) Group of IT Services.
- Corporate Communications videos: ETH members make use of videos produced by CC professionals. These cover topics of relevance to ETH as a whole. CC also offers video production courses.
The following information applies to all aspects of video production. CC and MMP would be pleased to advise you on the type of production that would meet your needs.
Useful information
Permit
You need a permit for all filming work carried out at ETH.
Equipment rental
ETH members can borrow video production equipment free of charge:
Infrastructure
MMP offers supervised production capacity in its video studio subject to charge. You can produce your own videos free of charge in the recording room.
Video footage
ETH offers you the free use of footage to supplement your video production. This includes drone shots taken of the Zentrum and Hönggerberg campuses.
Audio/music
ETH does not have a SUISA licence. The process of clarifying individual music rights of well-known pieces is time consuming and generally impossible. Consequently, if you wish to add music to your video, we recommend using a commercial solution such as external page premiumbeat.com or external page sounddogs.com, which for a lot less than CHF 100 provide you with a selection of music free of copyright, not to mention excellent search functions.
ETH members also can use a supervised audio studio for dubbing videos subject to charge.
Legal pointers
MMP will provide you with an authorisation form that covers all the legal aspects of a video production.
ETH Zurich communication channels
Make sure you contact CC in advance if you want to post anything in social media.
How to produce your own science video
How to produce your own science video is a course offered by the Communication Academy that provides you with everything you need to know when planning your own video production.
Accessibility
Videos should include subtitles for accessibility purposes; details are available in the IT knowledge base.
ETH Zurich video templates
As soon as you start planning your film, video or multimedia project, you should decide which video templates you plan to use.
Post-production/editing/software
ETH members can download Adobe Premiere as part of the Adobe Creative Cloud from the IT Shop.
Technical specifications
The technical specifications of videos are important for their publication and possible later archiving.
