Continued pay

ETH Zurich employees are entitled to continue receiving their salary in the following circumstances:

In the event of illness or accident, the employee’s supervisors must be informed immediately. On the fourth day of absence at the latest, a medical certificate must be submitted to the supervisor, who will forward the certificate to HR Operations. Furthermore, an accident must be reported by the injured person via the protected pageonline form.

In the event of incapacity to work due to illness or accident, the salary will continue to be paid after the probationary period for 365 days in the first two years of service, and for a maximum of 730 days from the third year of service. In the case of fixed-term contracts, the continued salary payment ends the expiration of the contract or at the latest when the maximum entitlement to continued salary payment of 365 or 730 days is reached.

In the first year of continued salary payment, the full gross salary is paid, including supplementary allowances. From the 366th day, 90% of the gross wage including supplementary allowances is paid.

Longer absences caused by illness or accident are taken seriously by ETH Zurich. If longer absences become apparent, i.e. if an absence lasts longer than one month, or if repeated short absences are noted, HR Consulting must be informed by the supervisor and/or the employee.

HR Consulting and Case Management accompany employees and supervisors during longer absences and support their reintegration. An early involvement of these specialist units is important for successful support.

Further information can be found in the Downloadinformation sheet illness and accident. (PDF, 37 KB)

Irrespective of the length of time they have worked at ETH Zurich, expectant mothers are entitled to four months’ maternity leave. They may begin their leave one month before their due date at the earliest. Half of the maternity leave can, on agreement with the supervisor, be taken in the form of a reduced level of employment.

Please note that HR Operations requires a copy of the birth certificate. Please fill in the application for family allowances by using the form wizard via ETHIS and send all documents to your personnel assistant as soon as possible. We will then confirm your maternity leave in writing.

For expectant mothers (parents) there is a summary of the most important information about maternity and parenthood.

We would like to draw your attention to the service point Hello Kids! that provides (expectant) parents with advice, information and support to help them arrange childcare.

Employees undertaking mandatory military or civil defence service or civilian alternative service are entitled to continue receiving their full salary for the duration of their service. Compensation for loss of earnings will be paid to ETH Zurich as the employer.

Exceptions to this are employees who are paid an hourly wage or who undertake their military or civil defence service or civilian alternative service after leaving ETH Zurich, who will be compensated directly by the compensation fund (AHV). Further information on this can be found on the relevant external pageAHV website (German).

Please note that, in each case, HR Operations requires your notification form (earnings compensation card) to be submitted. You will receive this form from your accounting officer on your last day of service. An earnings compensation card must be submitted for Youth+Sport leader courses to external pageYouth+Sport leader courses (German) too.

Please complete “Section B” of your earnings compensation card and send the signed original document to the HR Payroll team:
