Scientifica 2021 will take place - and is looking for helping hands
Scientifica 2021 will take place on the weekend of 4 and 5 September. The range of this year's science festival by ETH and the University of Zurich is larger than ever before. This brings some challenges for the organisational team. Helping hands from the ETH community are still needed.
Scientifica celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. In 2011, ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich invited the public for the first time to exchange ideas with researchers in the two main buildings. Whether at exhibition stands, in short lectures, science cafés or workshops: The enthusiasm of the scientists was transferred to the public. The university science festival grew over the years, attracting over 20,000 visitors each time. The exhibition became correspondingly crowded at times.
New locations, wider range
Actually, it was hardly possible to think of staging Scientifica a year ago. Nevertheless, the planning work had to be tackled. Due to the space situation, those responsible for the project first decided to extend Scientifica to both the Hönggerberg and Irchel campuses. They sent out the call for participation in a situation of great uncertainty. They were all the more surprised by the number of entries. More researchers than ever before registered their interest in participating. They are currently working flat out on their presentations.
Around 60 exhibition booths, 50 short lectures and dozens of events will be offered this year at the three locations Zentrum, Irchel and Hönggerberg on the theme of "Synthetic naturally". As always, there will also be events aimed specifically at children and young people. In addition, a series of events under the title "Science and the City" is on the programme in the week before Scientifica, which is being realised together with the City of Zurich. As always, all events will be posted on the Scientifica website at the beginning of August. A corresponding notice will follow here in the Internal news.
Helpers wanted
In order for Scientifica to take place, the project team has to overcome a new hurdle: Due to the decentralised organisation, a much larger number of helpers is needed. In addition, the safety concept, without which Scientifica could not take place this year, requires additional personnel. The concept stipulates that visitors need a Covid certificate. They have to show their certificate at the check-in station at one of the three locations and then receive a wristband that grants them free access to all buildings. Accordingly, checks must be carried out at all building entrances.
For these and many other tasks, the project team is looking for volunteers to help out on Saturday, 4 September and/or Sunday, 5 September. Whether you are an employee or a student, if you would like to experience Scientifica from a different perspective and get involved in this great event, you have the opportunity to do so this year.
Participate in Scientifica as a volunteer
ETH employees who would like to volunteer should contact directly. She is responsible for planning the volunteers and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. As a thank-you, all volunteers are invited to a thank-you dinner with all participants.
Students receive CHF 25 per hour for their help. You can register in the helper pool: external page Instructions for registering in the helper pool. They will also be invited to the thank-you dinner.
