Results of the ETH vaccination survey
On behalf of the Executive Board, ETH Zurich conducted an anonymous survey about students’ and employees’ vaccination status. The survey ran until 8 October, and the results are now available.
The Corona Crisis Management team and the Executive Board commissioned an anonymous survey to find out more about the ETH community’s vaccination status: who is already vaccinated, who is planning to be and who has decided against vaccination. Empiricon, an independent opinion research firm, was tasked with carrying out the survey, which ran from 29 September through 8 October 2021.
High participation rate of 54%
Nearly 20,000 students and staff members took part in the survey in a period of barely a week and a half – equivalent to a participation rate of 54%, which is astonishingly high for a survey like this. One encouraging result is that a very high number of students (over 6,600 Bachelor's and over 5,400 Master's students) took part in the survey. Nearly 64% of the respondents indicated that they were between the ages of 20 and 29 years old. The participation rate was similarly high among administrative and technical staff, nearly 2,500 of whom filled out the questionnaire. Professors – including private lecturers and assistant professors – had the highest participation rate, with nearly everyone in this category taking part.
Over 90% fully vaccinated
According to the survey, 90.6% of respondents currently have full immunisation, meaning that they have either received two shots or have recovered from COVID-19 and received one shot. For people with partial immunisation, the figure was 3.9%. For those already vaccinated with one or two doses, Moderna was used 71.2% of the time and Pfizer/BioNTech 26.3% of the time.
When also counting ETH community members who are planning on receiving a vaccination, the percentage of the community who will soon have full immunisation varies between 93.9% und 97.6% depending on the category. The percentage of respondents who are not immunised (meaning they are neither vaccinated nor do they have proof of having recovered from COVID-19) and do not plan to receive the vaccine is 4.8% on average.
Impact of the results
The Executive Board and the Crisis Management team are grateful for the feedback of everyone who participated in the survey. “We’re very glad to see such a high vaccination rate, which allows us to assume a very high level of community protection,” says Ulrich Weidmann, Head of the Crisis Management team. “Combined with the current coronavirus measures, this means that ETH Zurich offers a safe environment for working and studying.” The results of the survey will be taken into consideration in the next round of planning for pandemic containment measures.
