Should we abolish gift-giving at Christmas?

Many of us cannot imagine Christmas without a stack of gift boxes under the tree. Others would be more than happy to bid the custom farewell. What do you think? For the December issue of life magazine, we are looking for proponents and opponents of the tradition.

Just a few more weeks now until mulled wine, fairy lights and frantic shopping trips take over our lives again. In many families, one question dominates the run-up to Christmas: what gifts should I buy for my loved ones? What would I like to receive myself?

But how appropriate, how reasonable is the tradition of Christmas gifts? How does a festival of reflection and spirituality fit in with such rampant consumerism? And what role does the religious background of Christmas play in it all? Or are gifts simply a way of expressing your appreciation and gratitude to your family?

For the December issue of life magazine, we would like to know what the ETH community thinks about the topic. Are you a fan of Christmas gifts or do you hate the annual shopping rush? Send your strongest arguments to life@hk.ethz.ch by 5 November. We can help you put your piece together for publication. One “for” piece and one “against” piece will be published in the next edition of life magazine on 22 December.

We look forward to hearing your arguments!
