Preparing for tomorrow

The world is changing and so is the environment in which universities operate. The “rETHinking Universities of the Future” exhibition presents 60 drivers of change that will impact and shape the universities of tomorrow – including the ETH community over the next decade.

How will universities teach, research and interact with society in the future? Will universities turn into start-up factories where all students found a company before they graduate? Or will they become centres for global solutions that prioritise overcoming humanity’s most urgent challenges?

The forces that drive change

The “rETHinking Universities of the Future” exhibition, which opened yesterday and will be on display in the hall of the Main Building until 2 March 2023, presents six categories of change that will influence the development of universities in the next decade. Each categories contains 10 change “drivers” such as important technological developments that will impact what is taught – and how – at universities in the future. Other drivers are social in nature and influence how we work, what we study and who we hire. Economic, environmental, political and legal drivers are also part of the exhibition.

Visitors are encouraged to take an active role: using stickers, they can vote for the drivers that they think will transform universities the most over the next two decades. They can also pose questions and give feedback on a dedicated exhibition wall. Inspiration can also be taken from “Yesterday’s Tomorrows”, a subsection of the exhibition that showcases how people in the past conceived of the future.
