ETH Day 2020: live stream of the Academic Celebration

While this year’s ETH Day on Saturday, 21 November will have to take place with almost no guests, the approximately one-hour Academic Celebration will be broadcast live from the Semper Aula.

ETH Day 2020 will take place – but in view of the current situation, in a completely different form to other years. The Academic Celebration will need to be held with almost no guests in the Semper Aula. It will be broadcast live, however, to enable all ETH members and friends of our university to at least take part virtually.

Rector Sarah Springman will open the event at 10 a.m. on Saturday, 21 November, and take a look back at the turbulent academic year. Students will present two initiatives they launched in the spring as the exceptional situation was announced by the Federal Council.

Guests and viewers will then be welcomed by ETH President Joël Mesot, who will share his thoughts on past and coming months. The student perspective will be put forward by VSETH President Luca Dahle, who will also present the Golden Owl awards and the CS Award for Best Teaching.

Further awards – prizes sponsored by industry – will be presented to students who have written outstanding work, and as in past years, two young researchers will receive the Latsis Prize and the Lopez-Loreta Prize.

To conclude the event, the Rector will award two scientists honorary doctorates and appoint a further two individuals as honorary councillors. The approximately one-hour programme will be accompanied by music from a string quartet made up of members of the Academic Orchestra.
