The Art of Hearing Heartbeats: A Novel by Jan-Philipp Sendker
“This love story between two people with physical disabilities is extremely touching. The author has such a flair for bringing the world of Burma to life on all levels that it creates an almost unbearable longing. I highly recommend it, even for those who usually retch at the thought of a love story :-) – nothing sickly about this one.”
Tanja Fuentes, from the Professorship of Genetics

It is very nice to have lists of recommended books that your colleagues liked, and I appreciate that people took the time to do this, but in future it would be very helpful to have a few sentences about what the recommender thought is so great about each book.
I agree with you. When I recommended the book, I wrote something to it (I reckon we were asked to): I'd highly recommend "Zomerhuis met zwembad" from the Dutch writer Herman Koch. It is available in English ("Summer House with Swimming Pool") and German ("Sommerhaus mit Swimmingpool"). Herman Koch has a writing style that is easy to follow, binds your attention and keeps your curiosity up to the maximum about how the story will end. Hence, it makes you want to read the book till the end at once. In case you're a fast reader or holidays are long enough, I'd also recommend his book "Het Diner". Which is also available in English ("The Diner") and German ("Angerichtet"). Happy reading!
