Further progress with the “Barrier-free” programme
The ETH Library is offering new services contributing to a barrier-free learning environment. Moreover, the room acoustics in various meeting rooms have been improved. You are invited to a webinar on 24 October to learn more about the “Principles of universal design (design for all)”.
New services of the ETH Library
Accessible study spaces have been installed in four ETH libraries: study spaces with height-adjustable desks and large, swivel-mounted monitors with corresponding software are now available at the InfoCenter in the Main Building, the Green Library, the GESS Library and the Architecture and Civil Engineering Library. In addition, video magnifiers facilitate the enlargement of texts. While the study spaces are available for everybody, persons with disabilities can reserve them in advance.
Furthermore, the “SensusAccess” online tool is now available for use. This is a versatile and user-friendly conversion tool that automatically converts various types of text document into accessible formats.
A new ETH Library website contains information about the study spaces, SensusAccess and general information about the topic of accessibility.
Improved acoustics in meeting rooms
What do curtains, ceiling sails, wall absorbers and pictures have in common? They all absorb sound and in doing so help to improve the acoustics in rooms. The corresponding installations have already been carried out in some meeting rooms at ETH Zurich, such as in the Main Building, HIT Building and HCP Building.
“Principles of universal design (design for all)” event tip
Our “Principles of universal design” webinar (in German) is intended to support you in aligning your teaching formats and materials, apps, websites etc. to the needs of as large a group of persons as possible. You will familiarise yourself with the principles of universal design (UD) and be shown examples illustrating ways of applying universal design in practice in order to reduce and avoid barriers in a targeted manner.
The webinar is free of charge and fundamentally addressed at staff of ETH and UZH. External persons may also take part. The event will take place via Zoom on 24 October 2023 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Registration is not required. Please note that the webinar will be held in German.
Barrier-Free at ETH Zurich
ETH Zurich is committed to accessibility: over the course of the next few years, people with disabilities and those with special needs – whether students, lecturers, researchers, staff or visitors – are to benefit from greatly improved access to ETH buildings and services.
The proposed measures will be implemented in 14 sub-projects under three categories: “Construction, Building Usage and Architecture”, “Organisation and Culture” and “Technology, Communication and Teaching”.
