www.ethz.ch now also in Italian and French

The content of the ETH main site (www.ethz.ch) has also been available in French and Italian for a few days now. The translation is completely automated.

On a total of over 8,000 pages, visitors to the ETH main site can find information on studies, research, knowledge transfer and the university itself. This content has recently been made available not only in German and English, but also in Italian and French. The university relies on fully automated translation for these two national languages, thus meeting the Swiss Confederation's requirements with minimal resources. This is because the federal government has requested that the university also make the most important content of its website available in the national languages of French and Italian in future.

In order to minimize the effort required for both translations and website maintenance, IT Services and University Corporate Communications have developed an interface to DeepL. The system now also creates the Italian and French views based on the German pages and automatically adapts them when changes are made to the original page. Of course, this machine translation also has its limits. The automated solution means that the translations cannot be adjusted manually: the translations are therefore as good or bad as DeepL delivers them. In return, ETH Zurich can offer an additional service for our website visitors with virtually no additional personnel costs.

At present, this automated translation is only available on the ETH main site. University Corporate Communications and IT Services will analyze the use of this translation service and evaluate over the next few months whether extending the service to departmental pages or Staffnet, for example, would be a sensible alternative to the existing browser translations in Firefox, Edge, Chrome or Safari.
