Navigating the energy transition in an insecure world
This year's Energy Summer School provides an opportunity to explore the energy transition and its technical, societal and (geo)political dimensions in an increasingly complex and uncertain global context.
The Energy Summer School on “Navigating the energy transition in an insecure world” will take place from 31 August to 5 September 2025 in the Congressi Stefano Franscini (CSF) on Monte Verità in Ascona.
Participation is open for master's students, doctoral candidates, and early postdoctoral researchers interested in energy transitions in an increasingly complex and insecure global context. Since the nature of the topic is highly interdisciplinary, the Summer School addresses researchers from the engineering, natural as well as social sciences.
At the intersection of security, innovation, politics and society
The Energy Summer School focuses on energy security, technological innovation, (geo)political dynamics and societal resilience. Questions such as “What role do geopolitical relations and tensions and global governance play in shaping energy policies?”, “How can we safeguard the continuity of energy supply while decarbonizing the energy system” or “How can cutting-edge technologies be leveraged to enhance energy resilience and sustainability?” are at the center of attention.
Through lectures, case studies, poster sessions, and collaborative discussions, participants will get a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between technology, society, and the environment in energy transitions.
Speakers from all around the world
The lectures will be held by internationally renowned researchers and industry representatives such as Florian Egli, Professor at TU Munich, Itay Fischhendler, Professor at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tobias Griesshaber from Energy Infrastructure Partners, Bri-Mathias Hodge, Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, Kaja Hollstein from Swissgrid, Kavita Surana, Professor at WU Vienna as well as Gabriela Hug, Professor at D-ITET, Tobias Schmidt, Professor at D-GESS and Christian Schaffner, Head of the Energy Science Center.
Following the success of its first edition in 2023, the Energy Science Center (ESC) and the Institute of Science, Technology and Policy (ISTP) at ETH Zurich will jointly host the second Energy Summer School in 2025.
