New location in the ETH main building

After some six years in their temporary location on the Hönggerberg campus, the Thomas Mann Archives have moved back to the city centre.

As of now, the Thomas Mann Archives are housed in the ETH main building. Readers can now enjoy easier access and the professionally equipped infrastructure of the Reading Room Collections and Archives in the ETH Library.

With this move to the main building, the Thomas Mann Archives have left their temporary location at Hönggerberg, where they had been given a home since 2016, and returned to their origins. When the Archives were established in 1956, they were temporarily housed in the ETH main building before being moved to the nearby Bodmerhaus in 1961.

Exhibition due to open in the coming year

Following the relocation, the permanent exhibition of Thomas Mann’s study and private library remains temporarily closed. On 28 February 2023, a redesigned permanent exhibition and the special exhibition “Thomas Mann. Europe Beware!” will open in the ETH main building.
