Forschungsgebiet

Xiao-Hua Qin is the Professor (Assistant) of Biomaterials Engineering in the Institute for Biomechanics (IfB) at ETH Zurich. He is currently leading a multidisciplinary research team - Biomaterials Engineering and co-leading the Laboratory for Bone Biomechanics, with 6 PhD students to develop miniaturized in vitro bone models for medicine. He is currently serving at the Editorial Board of Biomedical Materials and Biomimetics. He co-teaches the  MaP Distinguished Lecture Series on Engineering with Living Materials and the Multiscale Bone Biomechanics courses every spring and fall semester, respectively.

Dr Qin's research aims to create novel biomaterials for cutting-edge applications in tissue biomanufacturing for regenerative medicine. His contribution to research has been recognized by a number of awards, including a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant . His research team at ETH Zurich focuses on constructing tissue-mimicking 3D microenvironments  in vitro , addressing fundamental questions in bone physiology and pathology. The ultimate goal is to build up miniature bone organoid models for disease modeling and in vitro drug discovery. Very recently, he was awarded a 4-year SNSF  National Research Program (NRP) 79  ''Advancing 3R''  grant to innovate a human organoid-on-chip tool, with the goal of replacing animal experiments of rare bone disease in the spirit of ''3Rs'' principle.
