Ludwig Gauckler studierte Physik und Materialwissenschaft an der Universität Stuttgart und doktorierte am Max Planck Institut für Metallforschung in Stuttgart wo er bis 1978 als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter und Gruppenleiter tätig war. 1976/77 war er Research Associate an der University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, USA. Von 1979 bis 1988 war er in der zentralen Forschung der Alusuisse/Lonza verantwortlich für Forschung und Entwicklung von Verfahren und neue anorganische Produkte des Konzerns und ab 1988 bis 2012 Professor im Department Materialwissenschaft der ETH Zürich.
Er diente zwei Perioden als Vorsteher des Departements Materialwissenschaft, von 1991‑1993 und von 2008-2010.
Seine Interessen reichen von den Kolloiden und den Verarbeitungsprozesse keramischer Werkstoffe, Verbundwerkstoffen und Schäumen über dünne Schichten und Micro Festoxidbrennstoffzelle (Onebat) und der Computer-gestützte Bewertung Modellierung von Mehrkomponenten-Metalloxid Phasengleichgewichte bis zu neuen Prozesse für die Verarbeitung von keramischen Materialien und Komponenten. Seine Entwicklung vollkeramischer Brücken für die Zahnheilkunde wird heute weltweit angewandt.
Er war Präsident des Wissenschaftlichen Beirats (WBR) der SATW (Schweizerische Akademie der Technischen Wissenschaften) von 2001-2014 und dient als Verwaltungsrat in mehreren Firmen und ist Gründer zweier spin-off Firmen.
